My worst fear realized...I got hurt.
I started to feel pain in my feet the Friday before the half marathon. I checked in with my coach and she told me to ice and stretch. By Monday it was worse. I decided to still do the hill workout Tuesday and spin class on Wednesday. So stupid. Rest means rest.
So it appears that I have plantar fasciitis. If you've never heard of it, it's common in distance runners and is basically tissue damage on your feet. It comes from wearing old running shoes, too tight calf muscles, or wearing unsupportive shoes when you aren't running. Since I wear flip flops all day every day except when I'm running, I think this is the cause. I have it a little bit in my left arch. A mild case will bother you when you first wake up and for your first few steps of running, then go away. That is the case in my left arch. Severe cases will not warm up and cause you to limp. That is the case in my right foot. Which is also swollen at this point. Self-treatment involves icing your feet, stretching your calves, and rolling a golf ball on your heel to break up the tissue. At this point, I have to go to the doctor next week.
I'm so bummed! Today's long run looked amazing; Running over the Brooklyn Bridge, then through Brooklyn over to the Manhattan bridge, and back to Manhattan. Then up Summer Streets, over to the Hudson and back downtown. It would be so awesome and pretty. And frankly I'm having a giant pity party.
Please keep your fingers crossed for me for a speedy recovery. And if you're running, don't wear flip flops!
Aww! Sorry! Hoping for a quick recovery for you!
