Yesterday TNT hosted a cross/strength training workout for the NYC marathon team. The monthly schedule they give us calls Wednesday cross training day, which is when I usually do spin class. I. LOVE. SPIN. I look forward to going, the music is great, although random. The teacher played the theme to National Lampoon's Vacation. Classic 80's video:
However, since the coaches were hosting a special NYC team training session I thought I'd check it out. Meanwhile...still miserably hot. I show up expecting a large group, but there was maybe 25-30 people there, 99% of whom were advanced runners. There were two coaches, one was the most ripped woman I've ever seen, not an ounce of body fat. They had us do various drills, including step ups, tricep dips, squats, and pushups all against benches. Side-to-sides or something like that, and walking lunges. The lunges were the most interesting because you have to lunge as you walk, then sprint, then jog. Man it MESSES up your legs...I highly recommend it. Your legs are tired from the walking lunges, then to sprint afterward is crazy, some people literally lost their footing because their legs wobbled. It's actually good because it helps your legs get used to running long distances despite muscle fatigue. Let me know if you want more deets on that.
Anyway, surrounded by such athletes who all knew each other and acted like orientation leaders in college I could self-consciously feel my lack of arm muscles flapping in the stale breeze. I did get a lot out of it though. But I think I'll return to spin. Maybe next week they'll play Man in Motion. Now THAT I could crank some resistance to.
